Requirements for a Medical Marijuana Card in Ohio

To qualify for an Ohio medical marijuana card, you must meet certain qualifications regarding residency, age (or authorization) and medical status.

Residency and Age Requirements

Your primary residence must be an Ohio address for you to use medical marijuana legally in the state. You must also be either 18 years of age or older or, if a minor, have a parent or legal guardian authorize you to use medical marijuana by agreeing to sign up as your caregiver.

Proving Ohio Residency

The most common forms of identity documentation applicants use to establish Ohio residency are Ohio driver’s licenses or state ID cards. However, if you don’t have either of those, you can instead submit several documents that collectively provide the necessary information.

As the caregiver of a minor patient, the parent or guardian would be responsible for procuring medical marijuana from a dispensary on the minor’s behalf and delivering and administering it to him or her. This protects the caregiver from the laws prohibiting marijuana purchase and possession by someone who’s not a medical marijuana patient in the state, but it does not protect the caregiver from the laws prohibiting use of marijuana by a non-patient.

Requirements for a Medical Marijuana Doctor in Ohio

Not just any Ohio physician can recommend medical marijuana to patients. In addition to holding a valid license to practice medicine in Ohio, a physician must also have a valid Certificate to Recommend medical marijuana to Ohio patients, known as a CTR.

A CTR physician is able to recommend to qualifying patients a 90-day supply of medical marijuana with up to three refills. This totals a 360-day supply for applicable patients if filled to the maximum.

As of January 19, 2022, dispensaries are now required to calculate the 90-day supply in two separate 45-day fill periods.

How to Obtain a Medical Marijuana Card in Ohio Using Telehealth

When thinking about where to get a medical marijuana card in Ohio, the best place these days is online using telehealth. While this option wasn’t always available to Ohioans seeking a medical marijuana card, it is now.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the State Medical Board of Ohio voted on March 18, 2020 to allow Ohio medical marijuana doctors to use telehealth to provide patients with medical marijuana recommendations and renewals. These new regulations will last at least as long as there is a declared COVID emergency.
